2012 Porsche Panamera Turbo S

In what is becoming common practice, especially among German automakers, Porsche introduced its Panamera Turbo S four-door luxury sedan on the Web on Wednesday, three weeks ahead of its formal debut scheduled for April 20 at the New York auto show.

Also becoming common practice is supercar-like power under the hoods of upper-echelon luxury sedans. The Panamera Turbo S is no slacker, with its 4.8-liter turbocharged V-8 providing a stout 550 horsepower, 50 more than the Panamera Turbo model. When trying to pass a slow-moving hay wagon on a country road, the driver can select Sport or Sport Plus mode, either of which increases torque output to 590 pound-feet from a pedestrian 553.

According to Porsche, the power increase was achieved by a move to titanium-aluminum turbines in the twin turbochargers. The lightweight turbines get up to speed more rapidly, providing faster response. The measurable result is a zero-to-60-m.p.h. clocking of 3.6 seconds, and a top speed of 190 m.p.h.

Exterior clues to the car’s sporting intentions include new 20-inch wheels, side skirts and an adaptive four-way extending rear spoiler.

The car will be available at United States Porsche dealerships later this spring, with an M.S.R.P. of $173,200, plus $975 in delivery and destination charges.
